AAT and the Myanmar Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), affirming a commitment to work together to support the development of entry and intermediate level accountants and accounting technicians in Myanmar.

The MOU recognises the need to deliver fit-for-purpose and practical accounting technician skills in Myanmar, and to provide greater access into the accountancy profession in the country. The two organisations will aim to increase the numbers of accounting technicians in Myanmar to serve the needs of the fast-growing economy, and those of the local corporate bodies.

AAT and MICPA have agreed to cooperate in:

  • promoting and supporting the delivery of an internationally recognised accounting technician programme in Myanmar, by drawing on AAT’s expertise and knowledge of accounting technician education, training and assessments
  • consulting with employers to ensure that the programme meets their needs as well as those of the accountancy profession and corporate bodies
  • continuing to promote the role of accounting technicians in international forums such as the International Federation of Accountants.

Justin Kyriakou, AAT International Development Manager said:

This agreement between AAT and MICPA will help to professionalise those at accounting technician level in Myanmar, in the same way as what currently happens at the more senior levels of the profession.

AAT’s intent is to help provide people in Myanmar with opportunities to develop their potential through the accounting profession, regardless of their starting point in life.

Mr Tin Shein of MICPA said:

This MoU will no doubt strengthen co-operation between MICPA and AAT in developing the accounting profession to international standards in Myanmar. It will also open up job opportunities for AAT-trained accounting technicians in corporate bodies that are badly in need of medium-level accountants for their growing business operations.
